How to choose a theme, script or app source code

A ready-made product can save weeks of work, or it can cost you a weekend if it turns out not to fit. This checklist is the one we use when people ask us for help choosing. It applies to WordPress themes and plugins, PHP scripts, HTML templates and mobile or game source code.

1. Write down the job, not the product

List the pages, features and integrations you need before you browse. For example: a booking form, five service pages, a blog and online payment. It is much easier to rule products out against a list than to compare demos by feel.

2. Start in the right category

Use the category list to narrow things down: WordPress themes for a site you will edit yourself, plugins to add one feature to an existing WordPress site, PHP scripts for a complete web application, app source code for mobile, and HTML templates for a static site.

3. Click through the live demo

Open the demo from the product page and visit every page type you plan to use, on your phone as well as on a laptop. Check the parts that are hard to change later: the header, navigation, product or listing pages and checkout.

4. Read the requirements

The product description lists what the product needs: the platform, versions, required plugins or frameworks, and any third-party services. Compare that with your hosting before you pay. For PHP scripts, check the PHP version and database your host provides. For app source code, check the build tools it expects.

5. Pick the right licence

The Regular licence covers one end product that is free to its users. The Extended licence covers one end product that its users pay for. Neither allows reselling or redistributing the files as they are. If you are unsure, read the licensing page or ask us.

6. Check updates and support

You get free updates for the version you buy. For anything you will run for years, such as a store or a SaaS, look at how recently the product was updated and what the description says about compatibility.

7. Plan the setup

Installing a theme with its demo content, or deploying a PHP script on a server, takes some technical work. Set aside time for it. If you would rather not do it yourself, see WordPress theme setup support and server deployment for PHP scripts.

8. Keep your purchase safe

After payment, your files stay under My Downloads in your account. Keep a copy of the original download before you customise anything, so you can always compare or start again.
